I don’t remember anymore. Did I feel more pain or pleasure? The soprano saxophone played with my feelings all evening long… made me happy and my heart took the shape of the biggest smile ever, it flooded the entire hall and made other people happy as well. You will of course ask me, how can a saxophone just do that? It’s really, really simple. He was played by Sir Sam Newsome .
„The Jazz Transcriptions of the Transilvanian Music” made me see our green valleys and feel the pain and sorrow reigning the beauty of it all, made me see our old, frail, empty villages. After that, it threw me straight into the abyss and I could feel the pain and joy of everything that touched and marked my soul forever… because everything did and does.
I mean it. I heard “ doina” played at the saxophone and I could also remember how playing music with leaves sounded like… I did.
Finally, the artistry of it all: Mr. Newsome’s solos: Beyond a genuine display of professionalism and talent… I am of opinion that Mr. Newsome wasn’t playing with his body. He was more than a saxophone player, he was part of a flow, a constant ethereal flow. He Was the Music he was playing.
P.s. …and this was about SAM NEWSOME & LUCIAN BAN Ensemble – The Romanian-American Jazz Suite ( 17 May, Cluj- Napoca)
P.s. 2: „The Jazz Transcriptions” were made by Lucian Ban, who luckily emigrated to America in order to bring us his music here and of course Mr. Sam Newsome.
Newsome, Sam Newsome.

Sam Newsome.
